Chicago Child Custody Lawyer

Child custody is one of the most contested issues that a divorce will raise. While many parties resolve custody and visitation matters outside of court, sometimes an agreement cannot be reached without the decision of a judge.

We recognize that parents want to protect the best interests of their child(ren), and Fairman Law Offices wants to do the same. Our firm has been assisting mothers and fathers throughout the Chicago, Illinois, area with parenting agreements that involve custody and visitation.

Chicago Child Custody Attorneys Who Care About Your Family

With more than 50 years of combined experience, our lawyers have obtained comprehensive knowledge of Illinois family law and have applied it to our practice. We understand the needs of families who are going through or have gone through divorce, and are committed to providing responsive legal counsel.

When you contact Fairman Law Offices, one of our accomplished attorneys will work with you to understand your situation and draft a parental agreement involving:

  • Legal custody
    • Legal custody refers to the parent who lawfully has the right to make important child-rearing decisions involving his or her minor child(ren). This includes decisions involving education, discipline, religion and other issues related to the well-being of the child(ren).
  • Physical custody
    • Physical custody relates to where and with whom your child(ren) will live. With sole physical custody, this does not preclude the noncustodial parent from exercising his or her regular parenting time with your minor child(ren).
  • Sole custody
    • If you have sole physical custody, it means your child(ren) will primarily reside with you. It does not preclude the noncustodial parent from exercising his or her regular parenting time with the minor child(ren), however. Additionally, either parent may be granted sole legal custody that allocates the major child-rearing decisions to one parent.
  • Joint custody
    • If you have joint physical custody, it means your child(ren) will reside with you and the other parent. Although, the residential period is not necessarily equal for each parent. Parents may also be granted joint legal custody, in which both parents are involved in making the major child-rearing decisions.

Fairman Law Offices has handled a wide range of child custody and visitation issues involving initial determination of custody, visitation and modifications.

Child Custody and Visitation Enforcement
Often a parent may attempt to unlawfully withhold visitation from a noncustodial parent because he or she has not paid child support. If the other parent has not been keeping up with his/her child support, or the other parent is denying you visitation of your child(ren) because of past due support, contact Fairman Law Offices today.
